а кто

радостно зарылся в фильмы начала сороковых, тот я Гленн Форд красивый в молодосте оказывается успел сыграть Мартина Идена (от книжки понятное дело рожки да ножки, но в целом передаёт настроение ХД) и ещё в куче всяких фильмов, даже до экранизации Ремарка и воспоследовавшего личного знакомства с Рузвельтом))
В частности - в фильме про тюрягу, где ему выглядит лет 14 XD (любили тогда фильмы про тюрягу, тот же Форд уже постарше ещё в одном снялся, примерно таком же, и Стюарт туда же, один из моих любимых фильмов Carbine Williams).
Как всегда оправдание в виде расширяемого вокабуляра, бгг. Вот из фильма про тюрягу вынесла выражение "купился я на твои байки" - you sold me a bill of goods, говорит герой Форда тюремному капеллану, который из лучших побуждений случайно сделал так что Форда приговорили к смертной казни (фсё кончилось хорошо, eventually)))
про фильм по Ремарку, Рузвельта и Форда няшное из Википедии:

а у кого под новый год заболел леченный передний зуб, тот я))) в полдесятого была как штык в зубоврачебном кресле, бгг. Пока не оч поняла, помогло или нет, бгг. Но вроде болит меньше.
Доктора одновременно с моим зубом слушали лекцию по пластической хирургии ("И вот таким образом грузинская девушка у нас стала рязанской девушкой...") Передохнула после зуба, и мы пошли с Басей катаццо на лыжах)) Было бы совсем отлично если бы у мну так не сводило мышцы которые крепяццо к лопаткам (мне массажист говорил, но я забыла как они называццо).
Передохнула после лыж, пошла затарилась алкоголем (ведро разнообразного просекко и !наконец-то! найденный бурбон "четыре розы," шикарная выпивка плюс воспоминания о няшном неудавшемся походе в Ботсад, лол)
После похода за алкоголем срубилась поспать (трезвая, просто устала оч.) Проснумшись посмотрела вполглаза вестерн про Билли Кида с Ричардом Тейлором (трагическое сочетание красивой внешности и отсутствия таланта, лол), попыталась прибраццо (нутакое)), разложила подарочки по мешочкам, стоят теперь красивые на подоконнике))
Пересмотрела Мизераблей с Марчем под вышеупомянутое просекко (а зачем ждать нового года когда можно начать уже прящас)), Марч прекрасен а Лоутон просто гениален)) Американская цензура тридцатых ужасно умилительная)) Итоги никакие подводить нихачу (я не так виртуозно владею матом), но может чо-нить завтра (тойсть уже сегодня) подведу, хз))
а, ещо как перестала работать, так тут же активизировалась в фб-группе про английский)) здесь надо какие-то выводы, бгг)

Подготовка)

Подарочки считай уже почти все припасла.
Квартира убрана... мнээ, местами. Но ещо есть время!
Из чтива на каникулы есть роман из жизни питтсбургских сталеваров и (надеюсь амазон успеет прислать до нового года) другой роман про скаута и друга апачей, плюс мемуары Гранта, плюс Хэмметта "Стеклянный ключ" (потому что кино с Лэддом было более чем прекрасное), плюс если вдруг захочется напрячь мозги, то Liebe Deine Nächsten Ремарка в оригинале (потому что кино с Фордом и Марчем)
На посмотреть из свеженького (в смысле несмотренного, лол) - дюжина фильмов с Фредриком Марчем (с 30-х по 60-е) и Шрека первые две серии на пересмотреть.
Для здорового образа жизни - лыжи, если не потает всё внезапно. Если потает - то фиг с ним, с образом))

Ну и фсё-таки справедливости ради, спин - спином, но Грант таки подписал приказ про "crows flying over it for the balance of this season will have to carry their provender with them," правда, это про Шенандоа в частности и Вирджинию вообще, но какбэ стратегия ясна как день, как ни назови, хоть total war, хоть что.

настоящий Ремарк

Меня с деццтва, спасибо братьям Стругацким, занимал вопрос "путешествий в изображаемое настоящее" (с), и вот. Фильм по Ремарку, снятый в 1941 году.

Перед тем как скачать, глянула аннотацию в англовикипедии, пишут, мол по роману Ремарка Flotsam, я такая тупо думаю, странно, вот прям совсем не помню у него такой книшки))) Начинаю смотреть и на второй минуте понимаю, что это "Возлюби ближнего своего". А на пятой вижу идеального Йозефа Штайнера, вот как если бы мне мозги просканировали на эту тему.



Это Фредрик Марч, тот самый Фредрик Марч который играл легкомысленного идиота в комедии про богемный тройничок, как, карл, он это делает и теперь я знаю чью фильмографию я буду смотреть в новогодние каникулы

Вообще хорошее кино, с огромным уважением к первоисточнику и офигительными актерскими работами (неудивительно что у Гленна Форда с этого фильма началась карьера в кино, было б удивительно если б не началась))

top 5, classic Western actors)

периодиццски подмывает сделать псто про "самые классные вестерны ever" но пока воздержусь ибо как обычно когда по чему-то реально прёт то из членораздельных высказываний остаётся только восторженное "ыыы")))
поэтому просто штобы не держать в себе top actors по категориям)))
1. Джеймс Стюарт - самый гениальный (диапазон от "я беззащитный зайчик" до "я убью тебя голыми руками и закопаю твой труп в пустыне потому что так будет правильно" за примерно ноль секунд по желанию)
2. Гэри Купер - самый обаятельный и relatable (я не знаю как он это делает, и судя по всему никто не знал, но обаяния хватило чтобы его друган Хэм написал под него книжку)))
3. Грегори Пек - cамый красивый. hands down.
4. Джон Уэйн - самый американский (со всеми плюсами и минусами it implies)
5. Алан Лэдд - самый няшный и недооцененный, увы (печаль, ибо удивительное screen presence, при том что чел вопщем ничего такого не делает, в стиле того же Купера, кстати)

Civil war period vocabulary))

в очередной раз открываю Америку коллекционирую слова из вестернов и книжек про гражданскую войну))
Южане с северянами друг друга обзывали не только Johnny Reb и Billy Yank но ещо и greybacks и bluebellies, соответственно. Не путать с greenbacks, которые федеральные деньги (в отличие от конфедератских, имевшие ценность).
Транспортные средства: steamer (именно steamer, не steamboat), stage (укороченный stagecoach, который дилижанс), чувак который управляет упряжкой из 6 лошадей или мулов - teamster, частное средство передвижения в виде платформы на колёсах с приделанным к ней сиденьем а-ля корыто или скамейка на рессорах - buckboard
Про ковбоев: they are not cows, they are steers! перегон скота - cattle drive, предприятие по эпичности сравнимое с wagon train когда народ караванами мигрировал (в основном) на Запад)

A few days out from Corpus Christi, the immense herd of wild horses that ranged at that time between the Nueces and the Rio Grande was seen directly in advance of the head of the column and but a few miles off. It was the very band from which the horse I was riding had been captured but a few weeks before. The column was halted for a rest, and a number of officers, myself among them, rode out two or three miles to the right to see the extent of the herd. The country was a rolling prairie, and, from the higher ground, the vision was obstructed only by the earth’s curvature. As far as the eye could reach to our right, the herd extended. To the left, it extended equally. There was no estimating the number of animals in it; I have no idea that they could all have been corralled in the State of Rhode Island, or Delaware, at one time. If they had been, they would have been so thick that the pasturage would have given out the first day. People who saw the Southern herd of buffalo, fifteen or twenty years ago, can appreciate the size of the Texas band of wild horses in 1846.

Generally the officers of the army were indifferent whether the annexation [of Texas] was consummated or not; but not so all of them. For myself, I was bitterly opposed to the measure, and to this day regard the war, which resulted, as one of the most unjust ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation. It was an instance of a republic following the bad example of European monarchies, in not considering justice in their desire to acquire additional territory. Texas was originally a state belonging to the republic of Mexico. [...] An empire in territory, it had but a very sparse population, until settled by Americans who had received authority from Mexico to colonize. These colonists paid very little attention to the supreme government, and introduced slavery into the state almost from the start, though the constitution of Mexico did not, nor does it now, sanction that institution. Soon they set up an independent government of their own, and war existed, between Texas and Mexico, in name from that time until 1836, when active hostilities very nearly ceased upon the capture of Santa Anna, the Mexican President. Before long, however, the same people⁠—who with permission of Mexico had colonized Texas, and afterwards set up slavery there, and then seceded as soon as they felt strong enough to do so⁠—offered themselves and the State to the United States, and in 1845 their offer was accepted. The occupation, separation and annexation were, from the inception of the movement to its final consummation, a conspiracy to acquire territory out of which slave states might be formed for the American Union.

Even if the annexation itself could be justified, the manner in which the subsequent war was forced upon Mexico cannot. The fact is, annexationists wanted more territory than they could possibly lay any claim to, as part of the new acquisition. Texas, as an independent State, never had exercised jurisdiction over the territory between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande. Mexico had never recognized the independence of Texas, and maintained that, even if independent, the State had no claim south of the Nueces. I am aware that a treaty, made by the Texans with Santa Anna while he was under duress, ceded all the territory between the Nueces and the Rio Grande; but he was a prisoner of war when the treaty was made, and his life was in jeopardy. He knew, too, that he deserved execution at the hands of the Texans, if they should ever capture him. The Texans, if they had taken his life, would have only followed the example set by Santa Anna himself a few years before, when he executed the entire garrison of the Alamo and the villagers of Goliad.

In taking military possession of Texas after annexation, the army of occupation, under General Taylor, was directed to occupy the disputed territory. The army did not stop at the Nueces and offer to negotiate for a settlement of the boundary question, but went beyond, apparently in order to force Mexico to initiate war. It is to the credit of the American nation, however, that after conquering Mexico, and while practically holding the country in our possession, so that we could have retained the whole of it, or made any terms we chose, we paid a round sum for the additional territory taken; more than it was worth, or was likely to be, to Mexico. To us it was an empire and of incalculable value; but it might have been obtained by other means. The Southern rebellion was largely the outgrowth of the Mexican war. Nations, like individuals, are punished for their transgressions. We got our punishment in the most sanguinary and expensive war of modern times.
