We may read for instruction a great juridical text of the period, Sir John Fortescue’s De Laudibus Legum Angliae – ‘In Praise of the Laws of England’ – and even applaud the development or ‘evolution’ of justice; but in practice the law was rotten and worm-eaten. We may say the same of the parliament house and of the court. It is not to be expected that any human institution will be other than rackety and only partially competent; only in histories do they proceed with ease to their ordained end.

Снайдер не про средневековье:

What people don't think about, is that dictatorship and democracy, it's not this sort of glorious fight of black and white where at the end of the day people are gonna rise up and defend freedom. The way it actually works is, you vote for the wrong person, you don't get to vote again, because elections become meaningless, and you start to become afraid of things you haven't thought of being afraid of before.

продолжаю

смотреть "Пустую корону" задом наперёд, первую часть. Вторая была хороша, но первая so far (первая серия)- это вообще огнище. Совершенно понятно за что Уишоу дали Бафту, потому что от его Ричарда Второго невозможно оторваться. Плюс визуально картина божественно, даже как-то излишне хороша. Визуал по красивости и масштабу напомнил всякую классику вроде эпического Бекета (64 год, с О'Тулом и Бёртоном).

Параллельно четаю Foundation Акройда, про соответствующий исторический период, Акройд как всегда прекрасен)) Вот про того же самого Ричарда:

One chronicler, known only as ‘the monk of Evesham’, described him as being extravagant in dress and imperious in temper; he was frightened of war and preferred to spend the night ‘carousing with friends’ and indulging himself in ‘unmentionable’ ways. This has often been taken as an allusion to Richard’s possible homosexuality, but to a monk many things may be unmentionable.

отсмотрела Freud's Last Session, свеженькое, 23го года кино про то как встретились Зигмунд Фрейд и К.С. Льюис в сентябре 1939 года и решили обсудить есть ли бог или бога нет. Из фильма получается что поделиться им было нечем, кроме банальных общих мест и относительно занятных (и хз насколько достоверных) фактов биографии.
Хопкинс, правда, как всегда прекрасен, но от этого как-то ещо обиднее
из ценного - полезное напоминание о том, что, например, пришлось пережить поколению того же Льюиса.
А так - I've read better fanfics than this, including those based on Lewis's work.

Soon after his arrival at Calais he received from Erasmus a diptych, which displayed painted images of Peter Gillis and of Erasmus himself on two wooden panels. More was delighted by the gift, so timely a reminder of his ‘humanist’ world in a place and period where he was embroiled in legal and commercial matters, and at once wrote both to Erasmus and Gillis in praise of a work which would act as a perpetual token of their presence in his life; he was ‘coniunctus amore’, united in love with them. In the painting Erasmus wears a ring on the forefinger of his right hand; it had been presented to him by More. Indeed throughout his life More was notably generous, and his contemporaries seem delighted to have offered him gifts in return, even if they were not always so magnificent as the diptych. In this period, for example, Cuthbert Tunstall sent him a fly suspended in precious amber shaped as a heart. It was an age in which friendship between men could take elaborate forms.

His constant proximity to the king meant that he became a figure of much authority and power, but there were more significant reasons for royal service. He truly believed the king to be divinely ordained, the proper source of the harmony and blessings of the ‘commonwelth’. Henry represented spiritual, almost magical, power. In that sense it became More’s duty to serve him. Perhaps the element of sacrifice in the choice, made it all the more pleasing to him; once more he could subdue his own inclinations, just as he subdued his flesh, in the service of a higher order. Yet he knew himself well enough to know that he might serve as a counsellor to his monarch and, a few years later, declared it necessary that every man of ‘good mynde’ should give ‘good aduyce towarde his prynce and his countrey’. It is fair to take this as a measure of More’s own feelings on becoming a councillor attendant: he would be in the very best position to advise and persuade the king to follow his own highest instincts and better judgements. He could only have been heartened when, on his entering the king’s service, Henry himself told him that he should serve God first and his master second.

God's Outaw, производственное кино про переводчика Библии на английский Уильяма Тиндейла. Кино вопщем так себе, но в качестве иллюстрации к википедии пойдёт) Плюс лишний раз полюбоваться на ещо одну инкарнацию набора полюбившихся персонажей в лице Генриха Восьмого, кардинала Вулси, Томаса Мора и Томаса Кромвеля) Генрих и Мор здесь прям совсем старенькие, в отличие от глав героя который молод и романтичен) Хотя на самом деле в изображаемый период и Генриху и Тиндейлу было несколько за тридцать, а Мору - несколько за сорок)) Зато Кромвель внезапно молод и хорош собой)) Вулси, как обычно, толст и неприятен)
Несмотря на так себе уровень, кино вопщем передаёт атмосферу времени, зарождение книгопечатания, распространение всякого небывалого знания типа греческого языка, и то что щас бы назвали аппроприацией священного писания (по типу "каждая кухарка будет управлять государством", в смысле, каждый пахарь будет толковать библию на свой лад))
Но вообще могли бы и получше фильм сделать) В конце концов, Тиндейл придумал Passover, atonement, the powers that be, и let there be light. И ещо всякого разного.
То есть реально, переводил с греческого и иврита (заглядывая в немецкий перевод Лютера), не хватало ему слов и идиом, и он изобретал свои

меня тут одно интересное ощущение, посмотрела-почитала всяких приличных по моим представлениям людей и чо-то укрепилась в нём: вполне может быть и так, что я закончусь раньше, чем вот это всё.
