More believed, or professed to believe, that Henry had engaged in war on behalf of, and at the behest of, the Pope. Julius II had formed the Holy League in the face of French attempts to promote schism within the Church; this had at least become the respectable formal cause of the war, and there is reason to suppose that More accepted it. The fact that he died for that concept, of the unity of the Catholic Church, suggests that it was of some importance to him.
